Baby Massage is a nurturing and loving practice, based on strokes inspired by Indian and Swedish traditions, reflexology and includes gentle movements for baby.
Our Baby Massage Course is taught over 5 weeks. Each week we will teach you how to massage a different part of your baby’s body and after 5 weeks, you will have learnt how to massage your baby’s legs & feet, stomach, chest, arms and hands, face and back – a full body massage for baby ! We also share a special sequence for the relief of Colic and Gas. You will receive a bottle of massage oil and an illustrated booklet, to use with your baby at home.
Infant massage is a traditional practice spanning many cultures and generations. It has been passed down from generation to generation (often from mother to daughter) and has wide ranging benefits, now being researched and proven by science – parents over many decades have shared the numerous benefits of infant massage.
Did you know, when you massage your baby, your and your baby’s stress hormones decrease. This may explain some of the relaxing effects of baby massage for you and baby ! Infant massage benefits baby, parents, the entire family and society.
Touch is the first sense to develop in utero & is the last sense to leave us before we die. Anthropologist, Dr Ashley Montagu wrote: “Human beings cannot survive without touch; it is a basic behavioural need.” Indeed it is. With healthy touch, the human infant not only survives, but thrives. IAIM
You will also receive an invitation to join our Mums and Bumps Club !
Benefits of Baby Massage for Baby
Interaction promotes bonding, secure attachment and wonderful quality 1-2-1 time with your baby. Helping to develop communication skills, stimulating all of baby’s senses – promoting love.
Stimulation of your baby’s body systems supports their natural development. For example, the Circulatory, Digestive, Hormone, Immune, Lymphatic, Nervous and Respiratory Systems. Baby massage improves co-ordination and balance, muscular development and tone and the connections between nerve cells.
Relief from discomfort, for example – Gas and colic, gastrointestinal cramps, excess mucus, growing pains and muscular tension, teething discomfort, sensitivity to touch, a disorganised nervous system, physical & psychological tension and helps to soften the skin.
Enhances relaxation resulting in improved sleep patterns and being calmer. Baby massage helps to normalise muscle tone, increase environmental coping mechanisms, improve baby’s ability to self calm (self regulation), reduces stress levels and stress hormones, nurtures higher levels of relaxing (anti-stress) hormones, reduces hypersensitivity and hyperactivity and enables baby to enjoy positive time out.
Benefits for you
Baby Massage supports you to understand your baby, by reading and respecting their cues. This promotes bonding and secure attachment, helping to improve self esteem and confidence, parenting skills and is positive activity together. It also enables relaxation, improves sleep, stimulates lactation, reduces postnatal-depression and offers early 1-2-1 involvement for dads – it’s a wonderful opportunity for you to discover your baby’s uniqueness !
Our Classes are held in a welcoming group setting, giving you an opportunity to meet other parents.
What’s happens in a Baby Massage Class?
Parents (mum or dad) are invited to join, where your baby will be massaged only by you. The practice is led by baby and we encourage you to listen to your baby’s cues – you are welcome to feed, change, hold your baby and meet their needs during Class. Babies are welcome together with their sounds and moods.
Classes run at a specified time, this is our schedule and not baby’s ! Our classes teach parents how to massage their baby, so that they can offer baby a regular massage at home, at a time when baby wants to massaged (this may be different for each baby). If your baby is asleep, you can practice the techniques on a doll in Class and when your baby is ready to be massaged at home, you will know what to do.
Please bring to Class any items you require for your own comfort (e.g. water) and the comfort of your baby (e.g. food, nappies, quiet soft toy, pacifier) including a thick baby blanket or cushion and a large towel to rest your baby on.
